FACULTY OF SPORT SCIENCES

 

History

The activities pertaining to the field of physical education began with the establishment of the university in 1955, and since then, they have been considered as essential parts of the students' educational activities. In 1974, the related activities of physical education were established in the Education Faculty. In 1975, the physical education department was renamed to the Center of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. In 1977, the first undergraduate applicants in physical education (90 students) were admitted through a theoretical and practical entrance examination, and, since then, a number of students have been formally accepted and graduated from the university each year. The license was granted for the establishment of the faculty of physical education and sports sciences in 1977. In addition to the undergraduate program in 1977, the faculty established the master of science program. Moreover, three educational departments were then established in 1979 (e.g., sports physiology, sports psychology, and sports management). In 2013, a PhD program was established for two groups of sports management and sports physiology.

Departments

- Sports Management Department: This department with two master's orientations (master of strategic management and master of leisure management) and a PhD program is currently headed by Dr. Seyed Hossein Marashian. 

- Sports Physiology Department: This department presents two purely-applied master's degrees and a PhD (in muscles and nerves). Currently, Dr. Abdolhamid Habibi is the head of the department.

- Motor Behavior Department: This department offers a program in learning and motor control at the graduate level. Currently, the department is headed by Dr. Seyedeh Nahid Shetab Boushehri.

 

Facilities of the Faculty of Sports Sciences

The facilities of the faculty of sports sciences consist of three indoor sports halls, a pool, five football fields, three tennis courts and a laboratory for teaching practical lessons. In addition, the faculty constitutes a lecture hall, an audiovisual room, and five classrooms, each equipped with a video projector, that are used for instructional purposes.

Library

The library of the faculty of Sports Sciences which is located on the ground floor of this building was founded in 1979. The main purpose of establishing this library was to provide students with a database including books, dissertations, journals and electronic resources.

There are 3750 topics including 8890 Persian books and 1122 topics including 1140 English books available in this library. In addition, there are many series and archives like dictionaries and encyclopedias related to the field of Sports Sciences.

For the purpose of classification, the Library of Congress classification is used. Resource cataloguing is performed based on the Anglo-American international rules and punctuation based on the International Bibliography Standard (ISBN). The library houses a lending table and a reading room with an area of ​​100 square meters. Library facilities include physical equipment, such as computers, printers, and network for the lending table and computers and network for the users. The following services are provided in this library: 1) Assistance and advice to the clients and introduce and find resources, 2) Training to use databases, 3) Purchasing resources according to the list requested by students and clients,  4) needs analysis of professors of Sports Sciences in three areas of Physiology, Management and Motor Behavior by providing the catalogs that are presented in the exhibition, 4) using the search engine to facilitate finding the required resources (The library system is web-based, so that the members can search the resources they need online wherever they are).

Students can borrow books for 15 days. The library provides services from 7:30 A.M. to 13.30 P.M. All the students of the university can use the library.

Introduction to the Lab

The lab of the faculty of Sports Sciences was founded in the late 1980s. This laboratory is located next to the multi-purpose gym of the faculty.  Considering the equipment provided during these years, several studies in the field of sports physiology, motor behavior and sports psychology are conducted in this lab. These include research on metabolism during exercise, body composition, studies on the respiratory system and respiratory function, studies on metabolism of fats and carbohydrates during exercise, and studies on learning and motor control. There have also been animal studies on laboratory mice.

Equipment such as advanced HP treadmills, fixed and portable gas analyzers, power plate, EMG electromyography, different types of lab treadmills, composite pneumatic devices for measuring body compositions, and different types of ergometer bikes for estimating physiologic indices during sport activities can be found in this lab. In the field of animal studies, there are important devices such as treadmills for rodents and mouse pools and wheel running, which provide significant assistance to graduate students who are working in this area of research. In addition to dissertations, theses and research projects, due to the appropriate place and useful devices, some of the courses of PhD and M.A. students are also presented in this lab. A large number of human and animal studies of PhD and M.A. students are conducted in this lab.

Introduction to the Computer Center

This center was established in 2001 and since then has made great progress in terms of work environment as well as providing hardware and software services. This center is located on the first floor of the Faculty of Sports Sciences and has 55 computers, of which 25 computers are on the undergraduate site and 30 computers are on the graduate site. The activities and duties of the computer center include:

1) Cooperation in the process of registration and selection of students, 2) Setting up user accounts and providing Internet service, 3) Setting up university email accounts for staff and graduate students, 4) Installing and updating university antivirus for faculty and students of PhD 5) Hardware and software support for computer systems, 6) Installation and support of video projectors for training classes and audio-visual rooms 7) Support and troubleshooting of wireless network and Internet network enhancement, 8) Installation of mobile VPN to enable the Internet connection.

Introduction of the Sport Facilities

There are 6 football fields, 7 tennis courts, 3 multipurpose gyms, a table tennis court, a gym, two outdoor basketball courts, two gyms, an indoor pool and a chess hall in the faculty of Sports Sciences. Students' practical classes as well as their official competitions are held there.
